FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT IS EVERYBODY'S RIGHT! Struggles for freedom of movement and the situation of migrants in Calais

Calais is a town in France at the closest point to the channel to the UK, which is only 30 km from there. Therefore Calais became a transit stage for many migrants moving around Europe with the aim to reach the UK. Their stay and their movements in Europe are 'illegalized' and because of the border controls between France and the UK they are in need to cross the border under dangerous and precarious circumstances. Often months are passing until they succeed, because of the strict and technologized bordercontrols and the targeted search for 'illegalized' migrants at the border. During their stay in Calais they live in squats or so called jungles. Furthermore there is a strong police repression and mobilization of local racist and fascist groups against migrants. The workshop aims to give an overview about the political situation in Calais. Activists from Calais Migrant Solidarity will talk about their experiences in Calais and about the possibilities of NoBorder activism.

Die nordfranzösische Hafenstadt Calais liegt an der engsten Stelle des Ärmelkanals und ist somit nur 30 km von Großbritannien entfernt. Deshalb dient diese Stadt als Transitstation für viele Migrantinnen, die sich quer durch Europa bewegen, mit dem Ziel Großbritannien zu erreichen. Ihr Aufenthalt und ihre Bewegungen in Europa sind "illegalisiert" und auf Grund der Grenzkontrollen zwischen Frankreich und Großbritannien sind sie auf äußert prekäre und gefährliche Formen der Grenzüberquerung angewiesen. Oft vergehen Monate, bis dies gelingt, aufgrund der strengen und technologisierten Grenzkontrollen und der gezielten Suche nach "illegalisierten" Migrantinnen an den Grenzen. Während ihres Aufenthalts in Calais leben sie in besetzen Häusern oder sogenannten Jungles, sind einer starken Polizeirepression ausgesetzt, sowie auch der zunehmenden Mobilisierung lokaler rassistischer und faschistischer Gruppen. Der Workshop soll einen Überblick über die politische Situation und aktuelle Geschehnisse in Calais geben. Aktivist_innen von Calais Migrant Solidarity werden über ihre Erfahrungen sprechen und über Möglichkeiten von NoBorder Aktivismus diskutieren.
